We have both taught the Bible as literature in Japan, to students who are (mostly) approaching it in the same kind of way as they might approach a play by Shakespeare or a novel by Charles Dickens, and we are looking at it in that kind of way, trying to visualize the text and get a grasp on what it is saying.
We are not aiming to be either reverent or irreverent here, simply to discuss the Bible as a piece of text, thinking about it in relation to its social and cultural context and looking both at what is said directly and what is implied. The version of the Bible that resonates most for both of us is the King James Authorized Version, and this is the version on which the discussion is based. We hope you find our approach useful and stimulating and that it will perhaps motivate you to look at the Bible and other great works of literature with new eyes.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
