0:00 Friday the 13th (light relief)
This week's topics: 1. I have a question about "appreciate". I sometimes hear people say "I appreciate you." instead of "I appreciate it." Is it grammatically correct?
2. Why can't you say "during sleeping"? "During" is a preposition but can't be followed by a gerund. Why is this? I know "while sleeping" is OK because "while" is a conjunction and "sleeping" is a present participle, but how about "There was a big earthquake while sleeping"? When the subject of a subordinate clause is different, this rule doesn't apply, right? Also, why is it OK to say "Please refrain from talking in a loud voice when crowded" (as in the train)?
3. I have a question about the future continuous used together with for and duration of time.
For example , Is it correct to say "I'll be playing football for 2 hours" ? if so then what makes it different from " I will play football for 2 hours"?
4. - "Who's that man over there?" - "That's Mike." - "He's Mike." A dictionary I have says the latter is not correct.
We will also be talking about English as a stress-timed language and how that affects "connected" spoken English.
