"Lycidas" by John Milton. An analysis. Part two: Lycidas in context
My reading of the poem is here: https://youtu.be/KlnhOiCTc0M
In this video I take a close look at what was going on at the ...time that "Lycidas" was written and published. England was in a state of upheaval, with puritan resentment of Archbishop Laud and his style of running the Church of England reaching boiling point. Within a couple of years of the poem's publication Laud was arrested and the country started to slide into civil war.
Milton himself sided with the puritans, against Laud and the king, but at what stage did his sympathies turn in that direction? Had he always been inclined towards puritanism, right from the start? Or did he become radicalized later on? And if he became radicalized later on, was it before or after writing "Lycidas"?
This video looks at these issues and tries to find some answers.
