Why did Dickens fill Oliver Twist with stereotypes? Reform and Conformity — full analysis

We think of Dickens as a social reformer — and he was. Oliver Twist is a sustained attack on the workhouse system and the 1834 New Poor Law. But look ...closer and you'll find the novel is full of the very prejudices of its middle-class readership: an antisemitic caricature in Fagin, lower-class characters who are almost uniformly brutish and mean, an idealised gentleman (Mr. Brownlow) in whom the reader can see himself — and Oliver, who interests us not because he is poor, but because he is well-born and has *fallen* among the poor. This video examines these stereotypes and asks why a great reformer chose to pander to them — and whether that compromise was precisely what made his attack on the Poor Law succeed where Henry Mayhew's failed.
